Acid–alkali titration

Method overview

Rinse and fill burette with titrant, rinse pipette with analyte and transfer a fixed volume to a conical flask, add a few drops of indicator, perform a rough titration, then repeat dropwise near the endpoint until concordant titres are obtained.

Apparatus set-up

Diagram
Clamp stand holding burette
Burette — alkali
Conical flask — acid + indicator

burette; pipette and filler; conical flask; indicator; white tile; acid; alkali

Independent variable

volume of titrant added

Dependent variable

indicator endpoint and titre

Control variables

aliquot volume; concentrations; indicator amount; technique

Apparatus

burette; pipette and filler; conical flask; indicator; white tile; acid; alkali

Safety

Wear eye protection; use a pipette filler; acids and alkalis may be corrosive/irritant.

Scientific rationale

Rinsing with the solution prevents dilution; only a few drops of indicator minimises its effect; a conical flask allows swirling without loss.
